Product Stewardship Internet Resource Guide
Companies seeking to minimize the environmental impacts of their products have this handy resource at their fingertips. It features links to U.S. organizations that promote product stewardship. Hosted on the California Integrated Waste Management Board’s server, California resources are well represented, but the list also lives up to its claim -- or rather its disclaimer -- to emphasize “efforts to establish national, industrywide product stewardship systems.”
U.S. initiatives are listed by product type -- from apparel to tires. The guide also links to a handful of position papers and resolutions from U.S. organizations. The international initiatives come from Australia, Canada, and Europe; several U.S. EPA links are listed under the heading "general." Perhaps most intriguing is the extensive list of links to Web sites offering definitions of product stewardship. In addition to the obvious gathering of nonprofit voices, a small selection of corporations are allowed to air their opinions here as well. The guide also includes a select list of research papers.
