Part of Carnegie Mellon University's Green Design Initiative, the Economic Input-Output Life-Cycle Assessment Web site provides free life-cycle assessments of various products. Users can estimate the overall environmental impacts from producing a certain dollar amount of any of 500 commodities or services in the U.S. The entire supply chain of requirements is included, so that the effects of producing a $20,000 motor vehicle include the impacts of final assembly as well as the mining of metals and the making of parts needed to build the car. The site can be used by anyone, but interpretation of the data may require more specialized knowledge.
