In 2007, construction design firms brought in $1.74 billion in revenue from green projects, the majority of which came from within the United States.

In the Top Green Design Firms 2008 list, Engineering News-Record, a McGraw-Hill Construction publication, ranks 100 companies according to revenues from projects that were registered or actively seeking certification from ratings organizations such as the U.S. Green Building Council and Green Building Initiative.

First place was taken by HOK, which has designed the newly opened Jean Canfield Government of Canada Building on Prince Edward Island and the 14-story CalSTRS (California State Teachers Retirement System) building in Sacramento, and redesigned a building for use as HSBC's Mexico headquarters.

The top 10 is rounded out by URS Corp., Gensler, HKS Inc., Fluor Corp., Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc., AECOM Technology Corp., Perkins+Will, Tetra Tech Inc. and Perkins Eastman.

Of the $1.74 billion generated from green design projects, $1.62 billion was from domestic projects. The largest chunk of revenue, 19.5 percent, went to building commercial offices, followed by education, health care and government facilities. Industrial/manufacturing, hotel, multi-use residential, retail, sports/entertainment, transportation and other types of facilities each accounted for less than 10 percent of the revenue.

The full report with a complete list of the companies, revenue and market data is available for purchase.
