End of Life Design... End ff Story
Creating products with a mind on end-of-life design will become one of the most enduring practices in Green 2.0. Reducing landfill waste by planning for recycling or reuse at the start of a product introduction should become the norm in the very near future, probably within a decade.
In order to jump start this movement, perhaps products that have end-of-life design built in or are 100% biodegradable or recyclable or reusable can be awarded with different green designations – so green consumers and purchasing agents can notice them easier.
I read an article recently that some supermarkets are color-coding food items –based on fiber content, fat, calories, etc. If consumers saw products marked with a green designation (like the Energy Star system for appliances) – they surely would look at them first ... and other manufacturers would quickly follow suit.
For industrial products, a different designation (and possibly a tax credit) should be assigned until the pendulum swings more widely in that direction.
Changing minds take time, as I wrote about in a blog posting, Are all consumers ready to go green? -- and hopefully a green designation can help jump-start Green 2.0.
