OAKLAND, Calif. -- Sony is expected to soon announce new types of packaging to replace hard-to-open plastic clamshell packaging.
The electronics company has been rethinking packaging for at least the better part of the year; at an annual employee meeting in April, Sony showed a video of people trying to open clamshell packaging - unsuccessfully - with their hands, teeth and a hacksaw. Sony has posted part of that video on its blog and says it is "working on the matter."
The company has developed new types of packaging to test in stores like Best Buy and Wal-Mart, the New York Times reported. Sealed plastic packaging was originally designed to deter theft by placing expensive or small items in larger packaging that could not be opened with just your hands. But there has been consumer backlash, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that about 6,000 Americans end up in emergency rooms each year with injuries related to trying to cut and rip open packaging.
Warehouse clubs like Costco and Sam's Club have been shrinking the amount of plastic used in some packaging to just enough to cover the product, and use sturdy paperboard to complete the rest of the package, still protecting products and making it hard to steal them, but making them safer to open.
And Amazon, which doesn't need to worry about inventory theft the same way stores like Best Buy do since it's an online-only retailer, debuted "frustration free packaging" for select items last month, reducing the total amount of packaging used for items as well as making products easier to get at.
