LONDON, UK -- During the first nine months of the year, bioplastic producer Stanelco's revenue grew 120 percent, to $18 million, compared to the same period in 2007.
Stanelco, which also makes radio frequency equipment, saw its bioplastic sales jump 450 percent in the period ending Sept. 30, 2008. Year-to-date sales of bioplastic products reached above $2 million.
The company attributes the growth to the growing diversity of applications for bioplastic, including coated papers, packaging, food trays, plates and servingware, plastic bags, personal care products, films and more.
"In the past year the type of customers have also changed to include mainstream brand owners who are looking to differentiate their product range," said CEO Paul Mines. "Most of this growth has come in Northern Europe but we are seeing increasing interest in the U.S.A."
Stanelco has invested in its bioplastic division, opening an office in the U.S. this year and adding customer support and technical development personnel.
Some of Stanelco's products can be composted at home; others need to be handed in commercial facilities to properly degrade. "We suspect that only a small percentage of bioplastics are actually composted at home or in municipal composters. In Europe, however, E.U. legislation is driving municipal composting and anaerobic digestion that will provide a scale 'end-of-life' path for bioplastics," Mines said.
