LONDON, UK -- Distribution group Premier Farnell has launched the second annual Live EDGE: Electronic Design for the Global Environment product design competition.

Live EDGE offers a total of $100,000 in prizes for designs of products with electronic components that have a positive impact on the environment. Entries are judged on originality, innovation, usefulness, energy efficiency, end of life, feasibility and cost optimization.

The competition includes a student contest and a general contest. The winner of each receives $25,000 cash and $25,000 in support services covering design consultancy, marketing, legal and intellectual property, investment funding and commerce to help make the products a reality. Additionally, Premier Farnell will market the winning products to its base of global customers. Up to three entries in each competition will receive honorable mentions and $5,000 each.

Entries are being accepted until Jan. 31, 2009, and early submissions will be entered into monthly drawings. One winner from each of three regions - Europe/Asia, the Americas and Greater China - will receive $2,000 from each drawing. Premier Farnell is also holding technical learning and networking events in its online Live EDGE EcoSphere community.

The inaugural Live EDGE competition last year drew 3,500 entries from 102 countries. The winning entry was the MyFan, by John Noble of Malaysia. He designed a ceiling fan that uses an electronically commutated motor and controller, LED lights and an aerodynamic blade that reduces power consumption by 66 percent when compared to traditional fans.
