LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Two packaging companies with heavy presences in warehouse club retailers are combining their resources to further the adoption of greener packaging.
CardPak and Winterborne, companies that have both developed clamshell and blister packaging with reduced and recycled materials, are teaming up their sales, manufacturing and transportation.
"We are now adopting each other's packaging," said Howard Mallen, Winterborne's executive vice president, adding the companies' sales teams will work in unison, "offering everything that each other has." The companies will also share shipping resources and manufacturing plants: CardPak's in Ohio and Winterborne's in Los Angeles.
While Winterborne has a stronger presence in Sam's Club, Mallen said, CardPak has a better foothold in Costco. Both are pushing to expand their presences in the clubs as well as in non-club retailers. "The warehouse club packaging is very different," Mallen said, because club products are mostly displayed on pallets, not shelves. The clubs were the ones who initiated changes in packaging, he said, because they wanted smaller and lighter packages.
Winterborne is most know for its Enviroshell packaging, made of 100 percent recycled PET plastic and 70 percent recycled corrugated board. The plastic portion covers only the product, and is sandwiched between cardboard. The packaging earned Winterborne an award from the Wal-Mart & Sam’s Club Packaging Sustainable Value Network
CardPak offers similar packaging in its SustainPak and ClubPak products, which it says eliminate 85 percent of plastic used in typical packaging and are used by Oil of Olay, General Electric, Kirkland Signature and other companies. The SustainPak contains 100 percent recycled paperboard and PET.
