MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Dow Chemical Company Foundation is expanding its support of green research at the University of California, Berkeley, with a $1 million gift to help establish the Dow Chair in Sustainable Chemistry at the university's College of Chemistry.

In 2007 the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation announced a $113 million grant to create endowed chairs for professors at UC Berkeley, offering those funds to match contributions from others.

"Endowed chairs are critical for recruiting and retaining top faculty and for ensuring that they have the flexible funding to pursue new directions in research and teaching that would otherwise not be possible," said College of Chemistry Dean Richard Mathies.

Last year the Dow Chemical Company Foundation made a $10 million, five-year commitment to establish and support the Sustainable Products and Solutions Program, developed by the university's Haas School of Business and College of Chemistry.

The Sustainable Products and Solutions Program sponsors research related to sustainable products and solutions, such as lifecycle analysis, resource reduction, carbon footprint measurement, bio-based materials and decreasing emissions. Earlier this year it announced $2 million in funding for 23 projects, including distributing efficient cooking stoves in China, Senegal, and Darfur, and developing sustainable packaging and hand sanitizer.
