MUSCATINE, Iowa -- The HON Company has started to offer seating treated with a stain repellant and flame retardant that uses fewer chemicals than similar finishes.

The company is using G3 Technology Innovations' GreenShield FR, a finish designed to offer the same stain and water repellant performance as other finishes, but with fewer fluorocarbons. The nanotechnology-based GreenShield uses an average of eight times fewer fluorocarbons than other treatments. The finish also offers flame retardancy, but without brominated compounds.

GreenShield is also being offered by textile-maker Victor Innovatex on its Eco Intelligent Polyester, which has earned Cradle to Cradle certification. Eco Intelligent Polyester finished with GreenShield holds Silver C2C certification. However, the same material without the finish holds Gold certification.

Scientific Certification Systems has also certified GreenShield as a low fluorocarbon treatment and Indoor Advantage product. By using water-based solvents, no volatile organic compounds are released from the fabric after the finish is applied.
