ENGLAND -- The Waste & Resource Action Program is providing a Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP) template to help construction companies comply with a government mandate as well as better manage their waste.

WRAP, which runs a number of programs to reduce waste and carbon emissions from businesses and consumers, is offering the template and related assistance free in light of legislation that will require SWMPs for all construction work in England worth more than £300,000. The requirement goes into effect in April, and through the SWMPs, projects have to lay out what they will do to monitor and reduce waste.

The group designed its template to meet the government mandate as well as include what it considers good and best practices for waste management, such as minimizing the amount of materials needed, separating waste onsite and training workers.

WRAP provides advice for minimizing waste in all aspects of construction, including design, material procurement, transportation, packaging and demolition.
